A home office is the one room in a house where a wall has an audience. Every video call frames the same 2 metres of background, and a flat magnolia wall does nothing for it. Panelling solves that, and if you choose the right type it improves the sound of the room at the same time.

Choose the wall the camera sees
In most home offices the desk faces a wall and the camera faces the opposite one. That opposite wall — behind you — is the one to panel. It is easy to get this backwards and end up with a beautiful wall that only you can see.
Sit at the desk, open the laptop camera and look at what is in frame. That rectangle is the brief. Usually it is a wall around 2m to 2.5m wide, from roughly 700mm above the floor to the ceiling.
If the room is small and the camera catches a corner, treat both walls of that corner to full height so the background reads as continuous rather than split.
Acoustics: what actually works
A small room with a hard floor, a desk and a window is acoustically bright: your voice bounces and calls sound hollow. Panelling can help, but only certain types.
Slatted acoustic panels are the ones that genuinely work. Timber battens spaced on an acoustic felt backing absorb mid and high frequencies in the range human speech occupies. One wall of slatted panelling in a typical 3m by 3m office makes an audible difference on a recording.
Solid shaker or tongue and groove panelling does very little acoustically — it is a hard reflective surface, the same as the plaster behind it. It looks excellent, but do not buy it expecting quieter calls.
The other cheap wins are a rug, curtains rather than blinds, and a bookcase with books in it. Combined with one slatted wall, that is usually enough for a room that sounds professional.

How panelling reads on camera
Cameras compress depth, so fine detail disappears and strong lines survive. Slatted and fluted panelling reads extremely well: the vertical rhythm stays legible even on a poor connection.
Shaker panelling reads well if the panels are large. Small busy grids turn into visual noise once the camera compresses them.
Colour matters more than style. A mid-tone wall — deep green, muted blue, warm clay, or natural oak — flatters skin tones and stops the camera overexposing your face. A brilliant white wall behind you makes the camera darken everything, including you.
Combining panelling with storage
The most useful home office wall is one where the panelling and the joinery are the same piece of work. A full-height panelled wall with a recessed desk, shelving above and closed cupboards below gives you storage, a background and a workspace in one plane.
Keep the closed storage at low level and the open shelving at eye level. Open shelving above a desk looks generous; open shelving at floor level just collects clutter.
Run cable routes inside the joinery at the design stage. Retrofitting them means cutting into a finished panel. Plan for the monitor, laptop charger, desk lamp and a printer if you use one, and put a double socket inside the cupboard for the router.
Lighting
Light for the camera first and the desk second. A window in front of you is ideal; a window behind you is the worst arrangement and no amount of panelling fixes it.
Add a warm light source that grazes the panelled wall — a wall light, a floor lamp in the corner or an LED strip in the shelving. That gives the background depth on camera and stops the wall reading flat.
Avoid a single central ceiling downlight as the only source. It lights the top of your head and leaves the wall behind you dark.

A single panelled feature wall in a home office, supplied and fitted in painted MDF, typically costs £600 to £1,400 in the south of England plus decoration.
Slatted acoustic panelling in real wood veneer for the same wall usually runs £1,000 to £2,200 depending on the veneer, and needs no decoration.
