Sliding wardrobes

Sliding Wardrobes in Southampton and Hampshire

Sliding wardrobes keep the floor in front of the doors clear. The door layout and the storage behind it need planning together, so the parts you use are easy to reach.

A fitted sliding wardrobe uses doors that move sideways on tracks rather than opening into the room. This can help where a bed or bedside table leaves little room for hinged doors. The tracks still need space within the wardrobe depth, and the opening is not as wide as the full run. Those limits matter when deciding where drawers and hanging rails go.

What to consider

  • Door travel and access planned together
  • Hanging, shelves and drawers arranged behind the openings
  • Track space allowed for in the depth
  • Door finish chosen to suit the room

Fitted sliding door wardrobes

The existing wardrobe service includes both hinged and sliding fronts. VIP Walls measures the room and plans the storage around what you keep in it. Sliding doors are one option within that work, rather than a reason to use a standard interior that does not suit your clothes.

Depth, tracks and clothes

The outside depth is not the same as the usable hanging depth. Allow for the back, the door system and the clearance needed by clothes on hangers. A shallow room may suit shelves or folded storage better than a rail running across the back. Check the chosen track system before fixing the overall dimensions, rather than using a depth from a photograph.

Skirting, an uneven floor and a ceiling that slopes slightly can affect the setting out. The top and bottom tracks need a sound, correctly aligned fixing surface. The frame can be fitted to the room while keeping the tracks level and parallel, so the doors move without running towards one end.

Door widths and access

Narrow sliding wardrobe doors are not automatically the best answer for a narrow room. Each door overlaps its neighbour, and adding more leaves can reduce the useful opening. Look at the clear space left when the doors are moved aside. A wide drawer that sits behind an overlap may be impossible to pull out fully.

Set the internal divisions against the door positions on a drawing. Put everyday hanging and drawers where they can be reached through an open bay. Higher shelves can hold bedding or bags that are used less often. A mirrored front changes the appearance of the room but does not change the access available behind it.

What affects sliding wardrobe costs

Fitted sliding wardrobes cost different amounts because the run length, door sizes, track system and internal fittings differ. Drawers and lighting add work compared with simple shelves and hanging rails. The finish also matters: painted joinery, mirrored panels and timber-faced doors involve different materials and preparation.

Compare quotes for the same layout. Check whether the frame, tracks, doors, interior, fitting and decoration are included. A supply-only door price is not a price for a complete fitted wardrobe. Rough measurements help start the discussion, but the final dimensions need checking in the room before anything is ordered.

Sliding wardrobe doors not closing properly

A door that catches may have dirt in the lower track, a worn roller or a track that is out of alignment. First check the care instructions for the system and remove loose debris without forcing the door. Heavy mirrored doors should not be lifted out without the right support.

Sliding wardrobe repairs depend on identifying the original hardware. Rollers, guides and soft-close fittings are not interchangeable between every system. If asking about a repair, include photographs of the track, the door edge and any maker label. A description of where it catches helps separate an adjustment from damaged parts.

Planning the next step

Use the enquiry form on this page to describe the space and the work you are considering. Include the main dimensions, the finish you prefer and anything that needs to stay accessible. A photograph showing the whole wall is more useful than a close-up alone. You can also call VIP Walls to talk through the room before choosing materials.

Sliding Wardrobes questions

How deep are sliding wardrobes?
The depth depends on the track system and what is stored behind the doors. Allow enough usable depth for hangers as well as the space taken by the doors; check the selected system before agreeing a measurement.
How much are fitted sliding wardrobes?
The price depends on the run, doors, hardware, interior and finish. Ask for the complete fitted layout to be priced, not just the doors. Our fitted wardrobe cost guide explains the main differences.
Can sliding doors open the whole wardrobe at once?
Usually not. One leaf slides in front of another, so part of the run stays covered. Drawers and rails should be arranged around the clear openings.
Are sliding doors better than hinged doors?
They save opening space in front of the wardrobe. Hinged doors can provide wider access to an individual bay. The better choice depends on the room and the storage layout.
