Cost to fit an internal door: what affects the quote?

The cost to fit an internal door depends on the door, frame condition, trimming, hardware and finishing. Compare quotes for the same work, with supplied items and any frame repairs listed separately.

The cost to fit an internal door is not just a price for putting a door on hinges. One quote may cover hanging a door you have supplied in a sound frame. Another may include the door, handles, frame repairs and decoration. Those are different jobs, even when both are described as internal door fitting. See our internal door fitting.

Start by listing what is staying and what needs changing. The opening, existing frame and finished floor matter as much as the new door. This guide explains the cost factors and questions to ask before buying materials or comparing fitting quotes.

Hanging only or supplying and fitting?

A hanging-only quote normally needs a clear description of the door and hardware you will supply. Check that the door is the right size and suitable for the opening before ordering it. Tell the fitter whether hinges, handles and the latch are included in your purchase. Missing fittings can change the agreed sequence as well as the final bill.

A supply-and-fit quote should identify the door construction, finish and hardware rather than simply say “new door”. Check delivery, removal of the old door and waste clearance too. If different quotes use different doors or exclude different tasks, compare those details before deciding which price represents the work you actually want.

The existing frame and a new lining

A sound existing frame can often stay, but its dimensions, alignment and fixing points need checking. Worn hinge recesses, a damaged latch area or loose timber can add repair work. An out-of-square opening may need more careful setting out. A door should not be forced to fit a frame that is unsuitable for it.

Internal door frame fitting cost involves more than the lining itself. Removing old trim, fixing the new lining and making good surrounding plaster can be separate tasks. New architrave may also be needed. Ask whether the quote covers these items and who handles decoration once the joinery is fitted.

Door construction, trimming and handling

Doors differ in weight, construction and the amount that can be trimmed from their edges. A heavier or glazed door can need different handling and hinges from a lightweight door. Check the manufacturer’s allowances before buying for an unusual opening. Removing too much material can make a door unsuitable, regardless of how neatly it is fitted.

The door’s finish also affects the scope. Bare timber, primed surfaces and factory-finished faces need different preparation. Cut edges may require sealing under the product instructions. Agree who does that work. Fitting does not automatically include painting the whole door or matching the finish of retained woodwork.

Hinges, handles, latches and safety requirements

Hardware changes the preparation needed. Hinges must suit the door and align with the frame. A latch and keep need setting out so the door closes without lifting or pushing it sideways. Bathroom locks and other fittings may require different recesses from a basic latch. Choose the actual hardware before the fitter makes the holes.

A door with a fire-safety function needs the appropriate complete arrangement, not just a similar-looking replacement leaf. Certification and relevant requirements can determine hinges, seals, gaps and closing devices. Establish the specification before buying or altering the door. Compare quotes against that specification rather than treating specialist fitting as ordinary door hanging.

Flooring, access and how long fitting takes

The finished floor determines the clearance below the door. Tell the fitter about planned carpet, underlay or other flooring that has not yet been laid. Cutting a door against the current bare floor can leave the wrong gap later. Agree the order with the flooring work before settling the fitting date.

Fitting time depends on the door, frame preparation, hardware and access. Several doors in the same house may have different openings, so a repeated per-door allowance does not describe every condition. Clear the work area and explain any access restrictions when asking for a quote. Ask how the fitting and any later decoration will be arranged.

Comparing internal door fitting quotes

Use the same brief for each quote. Include the number of doors, whether the frames stay, the proposed door details and the chosen handles and hinges. Photographs should show the full opening, frame edges and floor. Rough measurements help describe the job, but final checks are needed before a door is ordered or trimmed.

Online door-fitting prices can cover very different scopes. Ask for supplied materials, fitting, frame work, making good and decoration to be identified. Check what happens if removal reveals damage. A clear list of included work is more useful than comparing a headline door-hanging price alone.

Common questions

What affects the cost to fit an internal door?
Door construction, frame condition, trimming, hardware, access and finishing affect the quote. Check whether the door and fittings are supplied and whether frame repairs or decoration are included.
Is fitting a new door frame included in door hanging?
Not automatically. A new lining, removal of the old frame, architrave and surrounding making good should be listed separately where required.
How long does internal door fitting take?
It depends on the door, frame, hardware and preparation. Ask the fitter to explain the sequence, including flooring or decoration that affects the work.
Should I buy the door before asking for a quote?
Check the opening and the product’s trimming limits first. Give the fitter the proposed door details so size, construction and hardware can be assessed before you order.
