Media wall ideas: planning a wall that hides the mess

A media wall is the modern replacement for the fireplace and the TV stand. Done well, the television stops being a black rectangle on a bracket and becomes part of the wall, the cables disappear, and the room gains storage it did not have.

Done badly, it is a hot box with a socket in the wrong place. Most of the work happens before anything is built, so this guide is mostly about planning.

Start with seating, not the wall

Decide where people actually sit, then set the television height from that. The centre of the screen should sit close to eye level when you are seated, which for most sofas puts it around 1.0 to 1.2 metres from the floor. This is lower than most people expect and much lower than a television hung above a fireplace.

If you want a fire in the same wall, put the fire below the screen with a clear gap, or offset the two. Stacking a big television directly above a fire without enough separation is the most common regret we are asked to fix.

Fires: read the clearances first

Inset electric fires are the usual choice because they need no flue and produce controllable heat. Every model publishes minimum clearances above and to the sides, and they vary a lot. Those figures set the geometry of the whole wall, so get the fire chosen before the wall is designed.

Leave the fire's aperture slightly generous and trim it in, rather than building it tight. Fires get replaced; walls should not have to be rebuilt when they are.

Cables, sockets and ventilation

Plan the services while the wall is still a drawing. A recessed double socket and a couple of conduit runs behind the panelling cost almost nothing at build stage and are impossible to add neatly afterwards.

Anything that generates heat needs air. Set-top boxes, amplifiers and consoles inside a closed recess will run hot and shorten their own life. Either ventilate the recess or use open shelving behind a slatted screen so air can move.

  • Recessed socket behind the screen, plus a spare
  • Conduit from the screen position down to the storage recess
  • HDMI and network runs pulled in before the panels close up
  • Ventilation slots at the top and bottom of any closed equipment recess
  • A switched spur for the fire, in a position you can still reach

Styles that work

Vertical slats are the current favourite and for good reason: they add texture, they run the eye upwards, and they hide the joins between sections. Spacing matters more than anything — the slats need to be set out so the gaps at each end of the wall match, and so the pattern is not interrupted by the television or the fire.

Other approaches that hold up well: flat panelled sections in the same colour as the wall, with only the recesses picked out; a stone or split-face feature panel behind the fire; and a full-height fluted wall with the screen sunk into a recess so it sits flush.

Colour is a real decision. A dark wall behind a screen reduces glare and makes the television visually disappear when it is off. A pale wall keeps the room bright but shows the screen more.

Storage that earns its place

Most media walls end up with a horizontal band of storage below the screen. Handleless push-catch doors keep the front clean. Leave at least one open section for equipment that needs a remote-control line of sight, or use an infrared repeater.

If the room needs general storage, take the joinery full height either side and use the media wall as the middle of a bigger run. That is usually cheaper per metre than building it as a separate project a year later.

Lighting

Concealed LED behind a slatted panel or under a floating shelf gives the effect people are after, but only if the tape is genuinely hidden and the colour temperature is warm. Cold white light makes joinery look like an office.

Put the lighting on its own switch or a dimmer. A media wall lit at ten percent in the evening looks far better than one lit at full output.

Cables, ventilation and access

The part nobody photographs is the part that decides whether you are happy with a media wall in three years. Everything behind the panels has to be reachable without dismantling the wall.

Run oversized conduit between the screen position and the equipment recess, so a future HDMI standard or a new soundbar can be pulled through. Two runs are better than one. Put a double socket behind the screen and a further bank of sockets in the equipment recess, all fed and certified by an electrician.

Ventilation matters if the recess is enclosed. An amplifier or games console in a sealed box will run hot and shorten its life, so leave a vented gap at the top and bottom of the recess, or use an open-backed shelf arrangement.

If a fire is being built in, follow the manufacturer's clearances exactly. Electric fires all specify a minimum distance to combustible material above the opening, and that figure decides where the screen can sit.

  • Oversized conduit between screen and equipment recess, at least two runs
  • Sockets behind the screen and in the equipment recess, certified by an electrician
  • Vented top and bottom on any enclosed equipment space
  • Manufacturer clearances observed above an electric fire
  • Removable panel or access hatch to reach connections later

How high should the TV go on a media wall?
Set the centre of the screen near seated eye level, usually 1.0 to 1.2m from the floor. Comfort beats symmetry.

Yes, provided you follow the fire manufacturer's published clearances and design the wall around them from the start.
