Panelling transforms a bathroom. It hides tired tiling, softens a hard room and makes a small space feel considered rather than clinical. It is also the single most demanding place to fit it, because a bathroom is warm, wet and badly ventilated for part of every day.
Done with the right materials and the right detailing, bathroom panelling lasts as long as anything else in the room. Done carelessly it swells at the bottom edge within two winters. The difference is not skill so much as discipline.
Choosing the material
Moisture-resistant MDF, the green board, is the standard for painted bathroom panelling. It is stable, machines cleanly and holds paint well. It is not waterproof — it resists humidity, it does not survive standing water — so the sealing detail still matters.
Treated softwood tongue and groove is the traditional choice and works well provided every face is primed before fitting. Real timber moves with humidity, which is an advantage in a bathroom because the boards are designed to move against each other.
PVC bathroom cladding is genuinely waterproof and cheap, and it looks it. It has its place in a shower enclosure or a wet room, but it will never read as joinery. If the point of the panelling is to make the room feel expensive, avoid it.
Standard MDF and untreated softwood have no place in a bathroom, whatever the price difference.
Where panelling should and should not go
Panelling belongs on the dry walls: behind the basin, along the bath side, around the WC, on the wall opposite the shower. It does not belong inside the shower enclosure or as a splashback behind a bath with a shower over it. Those areas need tile, stone or a proper waterproof panel.
A common and very successful layout is tiled shower and bath surround, panelling everywhere else to three-quarter height, painted the same colour as the woodwork. It keeps the waterproofing where it is needed and gives the rest of the room warmth.

Heights and layout
Three-quarter height, around 1,500mm to 1,600mm, is the most flattering in a bathroom. It sits above the basin splash, gives the room a strong horizontal and leaves enough wall for a paler colour above.
Dado height at 900mm works in a cloakroom or where you want to keep the room feeling tall. Full height suits a large bathroom with a freestanding bath, but only if the ventilation is genuinely good.
Set the capping rail so it does not collide with the basin, the WC cistern or the light switch. Panelling that stops awkwardly around a cistern is the most common visual mistake in a bathroom.
The detailing that makes it last
Every edge and every face gets primed before it goes on the wall, including the backs and the cut ends. Cut ends of MDF are the thirstiest part of the board and the place failure always starts.
Junctions with sanitaryware, worktops and the floor are sealed with sanitary silicone, never decorator's caulk. Caulk is porous and will go black. Where the panelling meets the floor, either lift it clear on a moisture-resistant skirting or seal the bottom edge fully.
Fix to battens where the wall is a solid external wall, so there is an air gap behind. On an internal stud wall, direct fixing with adhesive and pins is fine.
Ventilation comes first
Panelling does not cause damp, but it will hide it and it will suffer from it. If the room mists up and stays misted for an hour after a shower, the extractor is undersized or not running long enough. Fix that before you panel.
An extractor with a run-on timer, an openable window used in warm weather, and a heated towel rail that actually gets switched on will do more for the longevity of your panelling than any material choice.
If there is existing black mould, deal with the cause and treat the wall before covering it. Panelling over mould traps it and makes it worse.
Paint and finish
Use a bathroom-grade or kitchen-and-bathroom acrylic eggshell or satin. Two coats over a primer, thinly applied. Matt emulsion has no place on bathroom panelling: it holds moisture and marks the first time it is wiped.
Darker colours work exceptionally well in bathrooms, especially in a small windowless cloakroom where trying to make it feel bigger with white never really succeeds. A deep green or blue panelled cloakroom with a good mirror feels intentional rather than cramped.
Costs
A single panelled bathroom wall, supplied and fitted in moisture-resistant MDF, typically runs £450 to £900 in the south of England. A full cloakroom panelled to three-quarter height is often £700 to £1,300. A family bathroom with several walls, cut-outs around sanitaryware and a window reveal is usually £1,200 to £2,500.
Removing existing tiles and making good the wall beforehand is a separate cost and can add several hundred pounds, so it is worth asking whether it is included.
