Media wall cost: what a media wall really costs to build

Every second enquiry we get starts with a photo saved from somewhere else and the question underneath it: how much does a media wall cost? It is a fair question and a genuinely hard one to answer with a single figure, because a media wall is not one product. It is a small building project that happens to end up looking like a wall.

This guide walks through what a media wall actually is, what pushes the price up and down, and what a proper written quote should list so you can compare one builder against another fairly. We build media walls across Southampton and the surrounding area, and the numbers below reflect what those jobs actually cost, not a headline figure designed to look attractive on a website.

Media wall vs panelled TV wall — they are not the same job

A panelled TV wall is decoration. Panelling is fitted around a television that is already on its bracket, the wall is finished flat or with mouldings, and the television sits proud on the surface. It is a relatively quick job because nothing structural is happening — no recess, no cable channel built into the frame, no appliance to plan around.

A media wall is joinery. It is built from a stud or plywood frame that creates a recess for the screen and usually a recess or shelf below for an electric fire, with the whole thing then panelled or slatted over the top. The frame has to be built to the right depth for the television and the fire, cables have to be routed inside it before it closes up, and sockets often need to be moved or added.

People use the two terms interchangeably when they search, which is understandable, but the price difference between them is significant. A flat panelled wall with a television on a bracket might be £700 to £1,200. A proper media wall with a recessed screen and a fire built in is a different scale of job, closer to the figures further down this page.

What a typical media wall costs

As a guide for supply and fit in the south of England, a media wall with a recessed television, a built-in electric fire and a run of storage either side typically runs from around £3,000 to £7,000. Where that job lands within the range depends mostly on the fire chosen, the width of the wall, and how much storage is built in alongside the screen and fire.

A simpler version without a fire, just a recessed or flush screen with slatted or panelled cladding and no cabinetry, is often £1,800 to £3,000. Add a fire and the figure moves up because of the extra framing, ventilation and electrical work the fire requires. Add full-height storage either side and it moves up again, because that storage is priced the same way a fitted wardrobe wall would be.

These are supply and fit prices including the panelling or slatted finish, the internal framing, cable routing and making good. The television, the fire itself and any soundbar or sub are usually bought separately by the homeowner, and we are happy to advise on models that suit the recess dimensions.

The fire is usually the biggest single cost driver

Inset electric fires vary enormously in price, and the fire you choose sets the geometry of the entire wall before a single panel is cut. Every fire has its own minimum clearance requirements above, below and to the sides, published by the manufacturer, and those clearances are not negotiable. A wider or deeper fire needs a wider or deeper recess, which changes how much framing timber and plasterboard the job needs.

Cheaper fires with basic flame effects are the least disruptive to the budget. Fires with water-vapour flame effects, sound, and larger viewing areas cost considerably more, both for the fire itself and because they often need more careful ventilation of the recess behind them.

Our advice is always the same: choose the fire before the wall is designed, not after. Trying to retrofit a bigger fire into a recess built for a smaller one is a rebuild, not an adjustment.

Cable routing, sockets and TV size

A media wall with cables tucked visibly down the back or run through a surface trunking strip is cheaper to build but looks unfinished. Proper cable routing means a conduit or channel built into the frame from the television position down to a recessed socket, so nothing is visible once the panelling closes over it.

This has to be planned before the frame is built. A recessed double socket behind the screen, a second recessed socket at the equipment shelf, and conduit for HDMI and network cable between the two, add relatively little to the cost at the framing stage and are close to impossible to add cleanly afterwards. If the existing socket is in the wrong place, an electrician will need to move it or add a new one, which is usually quoted separately from the joinery.

TV size affects the recess width and, to a lesser extent, the bracket needed inside it. A 55 inch screen and an 85 inch screen both fit the same basic method, but the larger screen needs a wider recess, a stronger fixing point built into the frame, and usually a wider wall to look properly proportioned rather than cramped.

Slatted, fluted or painted MDF — the finish changes the price

Painted MDF panelling is the most cost-effective finish and still looks sharp when it is set out well, particularly in a flat, grid-panelled style. It is the finish we would recommend if the budget is the main constraint.

Slatted timber, whether solid oak or a veneered slat system, costs more in materials and takes longer to set out because the spacing has to be even across the whole wall and work around the recesses for the screen and fire without an awkward gap at either end. Fluted panelling has a similar cost profile — real timber grain, more setting-out time, a higher material cost per square metre than flat MDF.

Mixing finishes is common and sensible: painted MDF for the main body of the wall with a slatted or fluted panel picked out behind the screen as a feature. It gives most of the visual impact of an all-slatted wall for a fraction of the material cost.

Supply-only vs supply and fit

Some joiners will supply a flat-pack media wall frame or panel kit for you to fit yourself, which is genuinely cheaper on paper. The risk sits entirely with the fitting — recesses that are a few millimetres out on a fire clearance, or a frame that is not built square, are expensive to correct once panelled over.

Supply and fit includes the design and setting out, all materials, the framing, the electrical coordination, the panelling and finishing, and making the room good afterwards. For a job with this many interdependent measurements — screen height, fire clearance, recess depth, cable routes — we would only recommend supply-only to someone confident in stud work and comfortable working to a fire manufacturer's clearance drawing.

What a proper media wall quote should list

A quote that only states a total figure tells you very little. Ask for a written breakdown covering the points below, and use it to compare quotes on equal terms rather than by the bottom line alone.

  • Frame construction: timber stud, ply lining, and how the recess dimensions are set
  • Fire make and model, with its stated clearances confirmed against the design
  • Panelling or slatted material, thickness, and whether it is moisture-resistant where relevant
  • Cable routing: how many recessed sockets, and where the conduit runs
  • Whether an electrician is included for moving or adding sockets, or quoted separately
  • Storage: what is built either side, and whether drawers or push-catch doors are included
  • Decoration: whether painting is included, and to how many coats
  • Rubbish removal and how long the room is out of use

Running costs — what to expect from an electric fire

We are joiners, not electricians, so we will not quote you a running cost figure with any precision, because it depends entirely on the fire's wattage, how long it runs, and your own electricity tariff. What we can say in general terms is that most inset electric fires used for effect rather than as the main heat source are inexpensive to run occasionally, and the flame effect alone typically uses far less power than the heater element. If heating output matters to you, check the fire's stated wattage and heat settings before you buy it, and choose a fire with a heater you can switch off independently of the flame effect.

Mistakes that cost money later

The single most common regret we are called in to fix is a fire and a screen stacked too close together, either because the fire clearance was ignored or because the wall was built before the fire was chosen. Sorting this after the wall is finished usually means opening the panelling back up.

The second is sockets in the wrong place, discovered once the panelling has closed over the frame. The third is buying a media wall kit sized for a different room and finding it does not suit the proportions of yours — a media wall that is too narrow for its wall looks like an afterthought, and one that is too wide overwhelms the seating. Get the wall measured properly against the sofa position before anything is ordered.
