Panelling behind a TV looks brilliant in photographs and causes more phone calls to us after the event than almost any other job. The screen goes up, the bracket pulls away from the wall, or there is a fat cable clipped over the top of a freshly painted panel because nobody thought about it until the telly arrived. None of that is necessary.
The fix is simple: decide where the television is going, and where its weight is going to be carried, before the panelling is designed. Everything else in this guide follows from that one decision.
Can you mount a TV on wall panelling?
Yes, but the panelling itself is not what holds the television up. MDF panelling, even 18mm moisture-resistant board, is not rated to carry a wall-mounted screen on its own. The bracket has to be fixed through the panelling into something solid behind it — the masonry, the block wall, or a stud and noggin arrangement that has been built specifically to take the load.
This is the single most important thing to get right, and it is also the easiest thing to get right if you plan for it. It is expensive and messy to fix afterwards, because it usually means cutting an access hatch into a finished, painted wall.
Once the load path is sorted, panelling around a mounted screen is straightforward. Most of our media wall jobs run the panel or slat pattern straight past the television's position, so the screen appears to float on the surface rather than being boxed around, which is the look most people are after.
Finding and fixing to the structure
On a solid masonry wall, this is usually simple. We mark the bracket position, drill and plug through the panelling into the brick or block, and the panelling thickness just becomes part of the fixing length. On a stud partition wall it is a different job entirely, because a plasterboard stud wall on its own will not take a 50-inch television safely.
For a stud wall, a horizontal timber noggin has to be fitted between the studs at the exact height the bracket needs, before the panelling goes on. We measure the bracket's fixing centres from the actual bracket, not from a guess, because VESA patterns vary and a noggin fitted six inches off is as much use as no noggin at all.
Batten and noggin strategy
If the whole wall is being built out with a batten grid to carry the panelling — common with slatted and fluted media walls — that grid can double up as the fixing structure, as long as it lines through with the bracket position. We build a doubled-up section of batten or ply behind the screen area specifically, wider than the bracket itself, so there is some tolerance for adjusting the screen's exact position later.
It is worth deciding the final TV size before this stage, even if the actual television does not arrive until later. Brackets and VESA patterns differ enough between a 55-inch and a 75-inch screen that guessing wrong means the reinforcement is in the wrong place.
Bracket types and what they mean for the wall
A fixed bracket sits the screen tight to the wall and needs the least depth allowance, which suits a panelled recess. A tilting bracket needs a little clearance behind the screen to angle down, which matters if the panelling around it projects forward. A full-motion arm needs the most depth and the strongest fixing point, because the leverage on the wall increases the further the screen swings out.
Whichever bracket is chosen, buy it before the panelling is finished, not after. Bracket depth and arm swing affect how far the panel face can project without the screen fouling on it when it moves.
Hiding the cables
The cleanest method is a length of conduit or a simple cable channel built into the batten grid behind the panelling, running from the socket position up to the TV bracket. This is fitted while the wall is open, and it costs very little at that stage. Trying to chase a route in afterwards, through finished panelling, is a much bigger job and best avoided.
We usually recommend an in-wall rated power socket positioned a little below and to the side of the screen, hidden behind it once mounted, plus a second recessed socket lower down for a soundbar, games console or streaming box. Running an HDMI or network cable in the same route at the same time saves a second visit later.

Where to put the sockets
Sockets behind a mounted screen need to sit within the bracket's cable-management cover if it has one, or be positioned so the cables tuck neatly behind the screen without a visible loop underneath. For a soundbar or console shelf, put the socket at the back of the shelf recess rather than at skirting level, so cables do not run across open panelling to reach it.
If the room has an electric fire below the screen as part of the same wall, that appliance needs its own switched spur, kept accessible, and it should not share a socket with the television's power lead.
Heat from electric fires and AV kit
Inset electric fires publish minimum clearances above and to the sides, and those figures are not negotiable. A television mounted too close above a fire will run hotter than it is designed for, which shortens its life even if nothing visibly goes wrong. Keep the gap the fire manufacturer specifies, and if in doubt, go bigger rather than tighter.
AV equipment tucked into a closed recess behind panelling — an amplifier, a games console, a set-top box — generates its own heat and needs air movement. A sealed MDF box with a solid door will cook a games console on a hot summer evening. Either fit a vented panel, leave a gap top and bottom, or use an open slatted front instead of a solid door on that particular section.
Soundbar height and viewing heights
A soundbar sitting directly under the screen usually needs a shallow shelf or recess a little larger than the unit itself, with clearance so it does not block the screen's own remote sensor. We build this recess to the soundbar's actual dimensions rather than a generic size, so ask for the model before the wall is finished if you already own one.
For screen height, the middle of the television should be close to eye level for the main seating position when seated, which for most living rooms works out around 1.0 to 1.2 metres from the floor to the centre of the screen. This is lower than a lot of people expect, and it is worth taping a piece of card to the wall at the proposed height and sitting on the actual sofa before anything is fixed.
Panel layout that centres on the TV
The panelling pattern should be set out from the television's position outwards, not from the corners of the room inwards. If the pattern is set out from the wall edges, the screen can end up sitting awkwardly off-centre within a panel or between two slats, which looks like a mistake even though technically nothing is wrong.
For vertical slat walls, we usually plan for the screen to sit either centred on a panel section or flush over a join, whichever suits the slat spacing better, and adjust the slat widths slightly across the wall so the pattern reads as deliberate. It takes an extra half hour on the drawing and it is the difference between a wall that looks designed and one that looks like an afterthought.
What to decide before anything is cut
A short list, but every item on it changes the wall's construction, so it is worth going through before booking a fitting date.
- Final TV size and bracket type, bought or at least chosen
- Whether an electric fire is going in, and its exact clearances
- Socket positions for the screen, soundbar and AV equipment
- Cable routes, including anything you might add later such as a games console
- Wall construction behind the panelling — masonry or stud — and where noggins are needed
- Final panel or slat layout, set out from the screen position
